Fort Barrancas

Fort Barrancas, on the Pensacola Naval Air Station, is one of several U.S. forts built by the U.S. Corps of Engineers in the 19th century along northwestern Florida's coastline. A dry moat surrounds the inner walls and makes access to the fort possible only by way of a drawbridge. Allow 45 minutes minimum.

National Museum of Naval Aviation, on the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, traces the development of American naval aviation from its beginnings to the present. Highlighted among more than 170 historic naval aircraft are the NC-4 Flying Boat, which in 1919 became the first plane to cross the Atlantic; the only surviving SBD Dauntless from the Battle of Midway; and the Skylab Command Module. Four A-4 Skyhawks are suspended from the ceiling in formation in the Blue Angels Atrium. Bus tours of the flight line feature additional aircraft. Walk-through displays portray a World War II carrier hangar bay, a South Pacific Sea Island forward Marine base and the wartime home front. Other exhibits range from pre-World War I memorabilia to items used by Navy prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. An IMAX theater presents films every hour. One wing of the 290,000-square-foot exhibit area showcases a replica of a World War II aircraft carrier island and flight deck with a working elevator. Visitors can take the controls of aircraft trainers and simulators and ride a motion-based simulator. Aviation art and photography also are featured. Food is available. Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
